【香菊日誌(二)】
The article “Taiwanese Doctors Needed Help” was written by a pediatrician in Taichung. It was a vibration when doing a treatment for a little girl who has an almost twenty-centimeter-long scar in front of her chest. The long scary scar was a record of having an open-heart operation in her childhood. It was a difficult surgery but it succeeded as a miracle. “It is surgeons who really save people’s life”, said the author. But the environment made doctors unwilling to become a surgeon even they have the ability and enthusiasm to save life.
There are more and more medical conflicts nowadays. As the author said, patients and their family members sue for any medical incident. They take the consumer’s perspective to blame those who tried to save life and never think to forgive them, which force doctors change what they are trained to do, leave the surgical department and change to a department where have less conflicts or even leave the hospital in order to save themselves from having big troubles. Finally, there are less doctors standing on the first line, which leads the situation that we would not able to find a life-saving expert easily any more. And there will indeed have less medical dispute since people pass away directly.
In my point of view, I am totally agreed with the author. Although doctors should follow their morality and try their best to save people’s life, what the society gives is no forgiveness while any kind of incident happened. Lawyers and patient’s relatives view every detail with magnifiers for several months, which doctors should determine in few seconds. If they did not, “human negligence” came and the sentence for those who try to save life is usually much more severe than the death caused by unlicensed doctors, drunk driving or serious risky food.
Since people have right to pursue a better life, so do doctors. Those who become doctors are undoubtedly top students in their student times and spent seven years to become an expert, which is three extra years comparing to other majors. They ought to have a superior treatment so that their pay out costs.
Supposing that we keep treat our doctors like this, not only the reports for doctors outflowing to other country will definitely become more, but also students who are now study in School of Medicine will tend to take a relatively low risk major such as ophthalmology, dermatology and family medicine instead of life-saving major. Then we will have a tough time when life-threatening.
